The Problem
The elderly population of India now totals more than 104 million people, around 8.6% of India’s vast population. This vast number is growing at a much faster rate than the remaining population, nearing 160 million just by 2025. By 2050, it is expected to surpass the population of children below 14 years of age. However, though there are a multitude of programs for the youth, there is little infrastructure to support the mental needs of the elderly. Most care and support stops at physical health and medicine, and little thought is spent in encouraging and facilitating social interaction. With the growth of the elderly population, and the increase in nuclear families, there has only been a rise in the loneliness and isolation faced by the Indian elderly. We must do our part to bring joy and wellbeing to their lives.

My Mission
My proposal is to build a platform to bring value into the lives of the elderly. After many meetings and interviews, I heard a resounding interest in pursuing their hobbies, sharing their ideas, and mainly, contributing to society. After all, just because one’s age is high, doesn’t mean that their input needs to be low.
My program gives elderly people the platform to sign up for activities that meet their interests, connect with like minded individuals, and spend their time feeling important. Each user will be able to create a profile, sharing their own interests, and mobility needs. They will then be matched with likeminded people, and recommended in-person activities to participate in.
An elderly friendly interface, sporting a completely straightforward process, will be at the forefront of our design, while those who offer activities will feel supported and satisfied.
One of the first programs for elderly people that is not a pill organizer, my interface will revolutionize the world of elderly care, and tackle the next biggest problem of our society.
Our Goals
Combating Loneliness & Isolation
By Creating an interface giving elderly people chances to make connections, we will remove the loneliness and isolation many elderly people feel. Each activity group will allow elderly people opportunities to discuss their own hobbies, while the outside experiences will facilitate meeting physically and engaging in a real experience. A program that specifically targets the elderly population will help cater to their specific mobility and health needs, making sure all can participate.
Creating Value
By specifically choosing activities and groups catered to the users interest, elderly people will feel important and connected while using this program. Those who are interested in nature, will get recommended nature related activities. This creates meaningful connections and moments, rather than trivial ones.
Targeting the Needs of the Elderly
Very few programs exist directly for the elderly, an audience that has its own separate needs and wants. Other than pill organizers, dating apps, or health trackers, few recognize the social need. Also, many are reliant on the usage of young people, acting as “grandkids”. But elderly people also enjoy connection and activities with those who share their vast life experience. This program will cater to this specific audience, using an easy interface, safety trackers, and mobility and age awareness.
Our vision for the future is to create a place where everyone feels joy- regardless of age. Care for the elderly should not just stop at medical aid. They deserve the resources to pursue their passions.
